Igor, Tyler, the Creator's sixth album, arrived on Monday (May 20) and is described by Pitchfork as impressionistic and emotionally charged, the work of an auteur refining his style and baring more of his soul than ever.
According to the review, his previous albums were largely defined by absence: of his father, of critical acclaim, of love. He answered what was missing with antagonism, album after album, until 2017, when he looked inward.
Igor sounds like the work of a perfectionist giving shape to his most radical ideas. Tyler produced, wrote and arranged the album, sings more and does not worry about traditional pop arcs. The first hint of the dissolving relationship comes on Earfquake: “Don't leave, it's my fault.”
