Steve Albini, producer, recording engineer and leader of the bands Shellac and Big Black, died on May 7, 2024, at 61, after a heart attack. His death was confirmed by staff at Electrical Audio, his studio in Chicago.
Albini became a reference point for independent rock in the 1980s and 1990s, both for his music and for his direct, unvarnished recording approach. He worked on albums including Nirvana's In Utero, the Pixies' Surfer Rosa and PJ Harvey's Rid of Me.
The musician was also known for his criticism of the music industry and for advocating fair fees and transparent contracts. Shellac, his most recent project, released the album To All Trains on May 17, ten days after his death.
His death prompted tributes from artists and producers who had worked at Electrical Audio or followed his career. Albini leaves a catalog that helped define the sound of several generations of alternative rock.
