Punisher, Phoebe Bridgers' second solo album, arrived on Monday (June 22). Pitchfork describes it as the record where she defines her songwriting: candid, multi-dimensional, slyly psychedelic and full of heart.
At 25, the California native writes songs for the moments when things fall apart, when language fails, when the distance you want is so great it would take a spaceship to cross it. The review notes that even with only a second full-length as a solo artist, she has already built a world unto itself.
The album was self-produced with Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska, with arrangements drawn to serve each individual story. The first single, Garden Song, is held up as an example of that care, and the record also writes about how listeners devote themselves to music and build identities around it.
