Lee Scratch Perry, Jamaican producer, singer and songwriter, died on August 29, 2021, at 85. His family confirmed the death and the news was reported by the press.
Perry was a central figure in reggae and dub, building the Black Ark studio in Kingston, where he developed mixing techniques with echo, distortion and samples that influenced generations. He worked with Bob Marley on the Wailers' early records.
In the 1970s and 1980s, he collaborated with artists including The Clash and Beastie Boys, while maintaining a prolific and eccentric solo career. His production helped define the language of dub and bass-heavy electronic music.
