American Dream, LCD Soundsystem's album, arrived on Friday (September 1) and is described by Pitchfork as a rebirth marked by an extraordinary album obsessed with endings: of friendships, of love, of heroes, of a certain type of geeky fandom and of the American dream itself.
The review recalls that James Murphy entered the realm of semi-stardom 15 years earlier with Losing My Edge, a song that both poked fun at and paid tribute to rock mythology. An ace student of the game, he knew he could not just reunite for a lucrative victory lap.
According to the review, Murphy once summed up the band himself: “LCD is a band about a band writing music about writing music.” The new album takes that idea seriously without turning it into an inside joke.
