Take Me Apart, Kelela's debut album, arrived on Friday (October 6) and is described by Pitchfork as technically stunning and emotionally realized, living in a new, outré, rhythmic pop galaxy.
The review presents Kelela as an intellectual in search of the body high, someone who understands how club tracks work best when tuned to the head and the ears at once.
The album is a document of the emotional mechanics of a break-up and the freeing nature of new love. On the title track, a sex jam produced by Al Shux and Jam City, she luxuriates in that radical openness between the two states.
