Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Juvi Chagas has released two albums simultaneously via the Brazilian label Deck, Café Passado and Café Futuro. The records examine love, breakups and imagined futures from different perspectives, following O Sonho da Lagosta, which she put out independently earlier this year.
Café Passado was previewed by the single “a ridícula ideia de nunca mais te ver” and leans on a lo-fi sound, with the score of David Lynch's Twin Peaks as an aesthetic reference. The album revisits how Juvi imagined the future in the past and sets those expectations against what actually happened.
Café Futuro was introduced by “comum entre os santos,” featuring Cyro Sampaio of the band Menores Atos. It turns to the tensions of the present and to what is still to come, with a sound marked by Latin psychedelia, addressing the urge to make connections and the distance that runs through relationships in the age of social media.
Guitar anchors both records, which move through jazz, fusion, Latin rock and psychedelia. Among the references behind the repertoire are Fito Páez, Os Mutantes, Mike Stern and Sonic Youth. Juvi also handled beats, synths, guitar, bass, mixing and mastering.
Besides Cyro Sampaio, the albums feature rapper Dragão Crioulo on “segue o baile” and Pai Guga on “eu sempre estrago tudo no final,” which adds Caribbean and Jamaican influences to the record.
