Miss Anthropocene, Grimes' fifth album, arrived on Friday (February 21) and marks Claire Boucher's arrival as a bona fide pop star, following the acclaim for Visions (2012) and Art Angels (2015). Pitchfork's review describes a record more morose than her previous work, but no less camp.
According to the review, her genuineness shines through the album's convoluted narrative, and the songs are among her finest. The experimental production that made her name in Montreal's DIY scene remains, now in service of a much bigger public persona.
The album follows We Appreciate Power, a November 2018 collaboration with HANA described as a cunningly meta prelude to the record. The track did not end up on the final tracklist, though it revealed the aesthetic cynicism behind the project.
