Glastonbury cancelled its 2020 edition on Wednesday (March 18). The festival, which was due to celebrate its 50th anniversary, had been set for June 24 to 28 at Worthy Farm in Somerset, England, with Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney and Kendrick Lamar topping the bill.
The announcement came via the festival's Twitter account, citing the new government measures announced that week and the uncertainty of the period. “In times of such unprecedented uncertainty, this is now our only viable option,” the statement read.
In their own statement, Michael and Emily Eavis said that although they hoped the situation in the UK would improve by the end of June, it was not viable to spend the next three months with thousands of crew on the farm. They called 2020 “an enforced fallow year.”
The organisers said they had been looking forward to welcoming everyone for the 50th anniversary with a lineup of artists they were incredibly proud to have booked, and apologised that the decision was not made through choice.
