Dogrel, Fontaines D.C.'s debut album, arrived on Wednesday (April 17) and placed the Dublin band among the most talked-about names in post-punk that year. Pitchfork's review describes a steely sound that infuses the bitterness and rage of the Fall with punch-drunk romanticism.
According to the review, the group is fuelled by neither IDLES' revolutionary fervour nor Shame's festering disgust. The outrage here is less about the state of affairs than a lament for local communities and culture in danger of being steamrolled.
The band's origins surface in the first line: “Dublin in the rain is mine, a pregnant city with a Catholic mind.” The unvarnished, melody-averse brogue of singer Chatten is, for the review, the record's most distinctive feature.
