Magdalene, FKA twigs' second album, arrived on Friday (November 8), four years after the previous one, and Pitchfork describes it as a revelation: her best work by far.
The review recalls that from her first video, 2012's Hide, her vision was apparent as a holistic project, one in which an operatic approach to club beats was inseparable from her art direction. Over the following seven years, that language kept expanding.
On Magdalene, twigs stays introspective but more obviously centres her voice as a conduit for plain emotion, rather than just one piece of a whole. According to the review, the album is not merely on the vanguard of pop: it sits in a class of its own.
