Fetch the Bolt Cutters, Fiona Apple's fifth album, arrived on Friday (April 17), recorded in and with her home in Venice Beach, California. She banged on its walls and stomped on its ground to pull sound out of the building itself.
Pitchfork's review calls it a wild symphony of the everyday and an unyielding masterpiece, adding that no music has ever sounded quite like it. Self-reliance is the record's rule, and curiosity is its key.
The album lands eight years after 2012's The Idler Wheel, and the review frames it as the next step in a direction she was already taking there. For Pitchfork, the result is kin to the revolutionary risk-taking of Yoko Ono and completes something Apple's career had been building since her first records.
