English Teacher won the 2024 Mercury Prize on September 5 for their debut album, This Could Be Texas. The Leeds band received £25,000.
Formed in 2020 at Leeds Conservatoire, the quartet beat nominees including Charli XCX, The Last Dinner Party, Corinne Bailey Rae and Barry Can't Swim. The judges highlighted the album's originality and character, describing it as a record that reveals new layers with each listen.
This Could Be Texas is the first debut album to win the prize since Arlo Parks's Collapsed in Sunbeams in 2021. The recognition boosted the band's touring and international visibility.
At the ceremony, the members dedicated the award to Leeds's music community and stressed the importance of local support for independent artists.
