Dead Man's Bones are back. The duo of Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields have released "Lost in the Night", their first new music in 17 years. The song was produced with the band's longtime collaborator Tim Anderson.
It arrives with a black-and-white music video starring Hamnet's Noah Jupe and The Summer I Turned Pretty's Rain Spencer, drawing on the lovestruck lyrics.
According to the duo, they set out to write new music in recent years but could not settle on where to record it. They tried a number of Los Angeles studios before driving to a farm outside the city with their gear: two guitars, two drum machines and two synthesizers. "Lost in the Night" was recorded there in one day.
Dead Man's Bones' first and only album came out in 2009. The self-titled record was made in close collaboration with the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir, a California education organization founded by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and crossed indie rock with gothic folk and doo-wop.
After promoting that debut, Gosling and Shields retreated from the public eye. Interest in the band persisted through covers such as Cat Power's take on "Pa Pa Power" for her 2022 album Covers, through film and TV syncs, and through a seasonal bump each year as Halloween approaches.
