When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, Billie Eilish's debut album, arrived on Friday (March 29) and turned the 17-year-old into a pop star at global scale. Pitchfork's review says the record lives in a world of its own: gothic, bass-heavy, at turns daring and quite beautiful.
The review recalls her striking rise, from posting Ocean Eyes on SoundCloud at 14. A glassy ballad with tearful synths and woozy crooning, it snared a young fanbase and pushed her against pop's rules.
On the album, she even uses her much-loathed transparent braces as intro material, in a series of clicks. For the review, it is a detail that announces a record built out of the singer's insecurities and persona.
