U.F.O.F., Big Thief's third album, arrived on Monday (May 6) and is described by Pitchfork as an intimate and surreal experience, a true masterpiece of folk music from a band working at the highest level.
The review treats the Brooklyn quartet as its own small ecosystem: guitarist Buck Meek, bassist Max Oleartchik, drummer James Krivchenia and Adrianne Lenker, the singer and oxygen of the group. That interplay holds the record together.
The album's mystery comes partly from Lenker's lonely and elliptical verse, compared by the review to Emily Dickinson if she had picked up a copy of Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark. The darkness of the first two records gives way to something more fantastical and alien.
