Graham Hill, the longtime drummer of Beach House, has announced his first solo album, Taking In Stars. It is his first solo departure from the dream pop band, and the record arrives with the lead single Monster In My Head.
The track leans into a Southern folk-rock sound led by Hill's warm vocals. According to Hill, the song came out of a late-night conversation with his son, who was having trouble falling asleep consistently as he entered his teenage years.
Hill says the line When I hear the smallest thing, and it snowballs into a scream was almost verbatim how his son described the issue. His particular experience was music playing repeatedly that he could not stop. Hill says it resonated with him as someone with an active mind and an obsessive tendency to overthink, especially when unresolved or uncertain things are playing out in daily life.
The album was co-produced by Hill and producer Donald Markowitz, whose credits include Van Morrison, Taj Mahal and Dr. John. It also features Shane Theriot, of the Neville Brothers and Willie Nelson's band, and Gabe Stillman, who has played with Buddy Guy and ZZ Top, along with guest turns from Tif Lamson on Promise That You Live For and phin on Pink House Blues.
Taking In Stars has ten tracks, among them Better Ways, Your Own River, Gravel Ghost, Heart Like The Sun and Sunday Return, and is out on 22 January 2027.
