A Deeper Understanding, the War on Drugs' album, arrived on Friday (August 25) and is described by Pitchfork as Adam Granduciel's most layered and meticulous record, a twilight world in which to lose yourself.
The review draws a parallel with Bruce Springsteen: in his early songs, the writing was about machines, cars, howling factories and creaky amusement park rides. Granduciel arrives at similar terrain from another angle, with the band's sound taking the place of the industrial landscape.
The result, according to the review, is a hermetic experience like no other, built out of the musician's obsession with the studio and with stacking layers of sound.
