4:44, JAY-Z's album, arrived on Wednesday (July 5) and is described by Pitchfork as a late-career gem, soulful and diamond-sharp, confronting the failings and legacy of Shawn Carter and America.
The review makes clear that the album is not JAY-Z's Lemonade, a response to Lemonade or a companion piece to it. It is certainly built around a betrayal, but it deals with his duplicity, the corresponding apology and his reassessment afterwards.
It takes JAY-Z 36 minutes to create the document he has wanted to make for years: a tell-all about infidelity, outgrowing friends and the way family shapes us and stays with us.
